The game received critical acclaim for its gameplay, atmosphere, music and graphics. Simply put, we couldn’t have made this list without Castlevania. We could have picked almost any game (save the reboot, that shit ain’t legit), but Symphony of the Night wins by a nose – it’s got the word “symphony” in the title, music’s clearly an important part of it. It’s a game that actually gives you the name of the track playing in certain sequences, almost as if you’re taking part in a bizarre 2D platforming music video, and for some reason, that makes perfect sense. Massively popular in Japan, the Ys series never really took off in the West in the same way as, say, Final Fantasy, but it shouldn’t be overlooked. The first two games were bundled together for the US market on the short-lived PC Engine/TurboGrafx console, and while the console itself has been mostly forgotten, the games themselves are among the best of their era.
The game has a quirky style which wasn’t originally received well in North America. But, if you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, then you definitely shouldn’t judge this game by its initial appearance. EarthBound continues to be one of the most charming SNES games, and we’re excited to have it on the SNES Classic and in our Top 10. The Super Nintendo is one of the most iconic consoles of all time.
