What would the Viennese be without their forest? Poorer by a natural wonder of 1,300 square kilometers. In Europe there is no similarly large forest area right next to a city of millions.

Thousands of visitors make a pilgrimage to the Vienna Woods every year, also known as “the green lung of Vienna”. It is one of the best developed hiking areas in Austria. Large parts of the 6,000 km long hiking routes are local trails. There is also a well-developed network of mountain bike trails. 44 bike routes with a length of over a thousand kilometers lead through the region. From Vienna you can connect to the route network at 16 points.

Under the Vienna Woods In the Seegrotte Hinterbrühl you can take boat tours on the largest underground lake in Europe. Seven springs feed the 6,200 square meter body of water. Music lovers from all over the world like to eat in the Höldrichsmühle, where, according to legend, Franz Schubert was inspired to write his song “Am Brunnen vor dem Tore”. And in the pilgrimage site of Maria Gugging near Klosterneuburg there is a replica of the Lourdes grotto. The copy is of course much smaller than the French original, but the same marble was used for the altar as in Lourdes.

Only 15 kilometers outside of Vienna you can immerse yourself in a wonderland of the past at Laxenburg Castle. The popular summer residence of the imperial family impresses with its 280 hectare park, which invites you to take long walks, and the castle pond can be accessed by electric boat. The romantic pleasure house is a popular wedding backdrop.

“When I see this lake, I don’t need a sea.” “This thought inevitably occurs when you stand on the shore of the Erlaufsee. Turquoise green and idyllic it lies there, embedded between mountain slopes, directly on the Styrian-Lower Austrian border. The bathing paradise without admission, mass occupancy and parasols is located at 837 meters above sea level.

Visibility of up to 20 meters and an exciting underwater world make the lake a small Eldorado for divers. You can marvel at the numerous pike, perch, brown trout and rainbow trout, all of which are of considerable size. They are also an incentive for the many Petri disciples who go stalking here. If you want to go on a voyage of discovery on the water, you can do so with one of the 30 available pedal boats, electric boats or rowing boats.

Unfortunately the competition has ended!

outlook

The Erlaufsee is also an ideal starting point for hiking tours. 200 kilometers of marked trails run through the area. You should plan a total of three hours for a lap around the lake. The tour takes you past rustic farms and imposing villas with spacious gardens.

The most demanding hike leads to the almost 2,000 meter high Ötscher (Vaterberg), the landmark of the Mostviertel. The tour requires a head for heights and good mountain equipment. From Nestelbergsäge (or Lackenhof) it takes around six hours; The Ötscherschutzhaus is ideal for overnight stays.

A chair lift goes up the 1,626 meter high Gemeindealpe. At the summit is the Terzerhaus inn, with good cuisine and overnight accommodation.

Prague is so rich in sights and beautiful corners that a weekend is not enough to see everything. If you try anyway, you could start early on Saturday on the Vltava.

The hearty farmers’ market and the modern Kampa Museum on the Vltava Island of the same name form a nice contrast. If you like shopping, you should use Saturday for this, as many shops are closed on Sunday. Part of the sightseeing is done almost on the side: Wenceslas Square with the National Museum and Wenceslas statue and the Old Town Square with Tyn Church and the Old Town Hall with the astronomical clock.

At the latest when the evening sun bathes Prague in a golden light, you should – like many other tourists – stand on the Charles Bridge and look at the Hradschin, the Prague Castle, before you have dinner in one of Prague’s particularly beautiful cafés. In the Café de Paris you can get warm food at reasonable prices until late at night, the Café Savoy is a favorite place of the locals, the Café Imperial shines with opulence.

Sunday . The Jewish quarter in Prague, founded in the 13th century, was spared the destruction of the Nazis because they wanted to keep it as a museum. This is why there are gems like the Old New Synagogue, the oldest, undamaged synagogue in Europe. Closed on Saturday because of the Shabbat rest, all facilities can be visited on Sunday. In the afternoon there are still a few hours that you need to visit Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral.

In the Murtal, speed and deceleration are very close together. While there is traditionally a lot of industry on the plain and the F1 engines have been roaring again in Spielberg since last year, a few kilometers away in the mountains you can find places of peace and relaxation. The Spielberg project donated 1,000 bicycles that can be borrowed from hotels and restaurants and thus explore the area without any horsepower.

Starting in June, the new type of cycle node system “Take’s Radl Murtal” will provide orientation, which is based on the principle of Dutch cycle path networks. You don’t follow predefined tours, but put together your own route based on 110 nodes. The Murtal app, which already provides detailed information on the region, makes it easy to plan excursions on the 250-kilometer cycle path system.

ÖBB is giving away a suitcase full of travel! Attention: The competition has unfortunately expired.

Well-trained cyclists will probably also manage to reach tempting goals at high altitudes. If you don’t necessarily want to experience the motto of the region “feel your heart pounding” first hand, you can also rent a “Zirbenland scooter”, a 125 cubic scooter with which you can effortlessly explore the mountain roads of the Seckau Alps and the hiking trails up high can drive. You can also “take” one or the other hut with you: The mountain lake is right next door in the Winterleiten hut in Judenburg.
